Fire Tablet on-screen keyboard not working

When on-screen keyboard cannot be accessed:
A) check settings to ensure on screen keyboard was not turned off.
B) if settings look correct make sure system software is up-to-date
C) if keyboard still not working; found solution at ifixit.com forum with keyboard solution:

1) Turn keyboard language to Japanese
2) then go to Amazon store and select search and keyboard should pop up. 
3) where symbol button should be there will be a Japanese character with and "A" next to a "1" under that. 
4) Ensure "A" is selected. 
5) go back to settings and convert back to English (US)
6) confirm keyboard works in other apps.
